Dew measurement is the determination of the amount (weight or volume) of deposited dew . Since the amount of dew is particularly important in semi-arid and arid regions, but its metrological determination is difficult, there are a variety of applied measuring principles, although these are only partially comparable. In general, the weight of a standardized exposed body is determined, which is why it is called a dew balance. The Leick dew plate is more widely used; this determines the weight of an amount of dew deposited on a dew plate that is freely exposed on both sides. Hygroscopic plates are used as dew plates. These are made of ceramic with a ratio of diatomaceous earth, alabaster and water of 1:2:4 and have a standardized size. The increase in weight of the dew plate corresponds to the amount of dew deposited. The plate can also be used on a recording balance as a dew balance or dew recorder.
