The word “pegel” comes from Low German pegel “calibration mark” from Middle Latin pagella “measuring stick” and is etymologically related to “pegel”, the measurement of a direction.

In colloquial language, "gauge" is also mistakenly used as a synonym for the water level itself. However, the gauge only measures the water level, from which the water level (water height for a representative section of the body of water) can be derived.
