The water dipping thermometer is used to measure water temperatures in surface waters. It consists of a metal housing containing a mercury thermometer. The mode of operation is based on the fact that the measuring chamber is filled with water at the measuring depth, and thus the thermometer vessel assumes the water temperature. When the thermometer is pulled to the surface, the water remaining in the measuring chamber maintains the water temperature at the measuring point.
Without prejudice to more stringent requirements laid down in other relevant Union legislation, the export, import and manufacture of mercury-set products listed in Annex II shall be prohibited in the Union from the date specified therein. 2. The prohibition set out in paragraph 1 shall not apply to the following mercury-set products: (a) products essential for civil protection and military purposes; (b) products used for research, for the calibration of instruments or for use as a reference standard.
